Each piece shall be a cutting of a scene (or scenes) from any published play
classified as a comedy (no screenplays or television scripts). The scene need
not be a complete scene or act, but should function as a meaningful unit of
drama. – No internet-published pieces allowed!
The time limits for the monologue, pair, and scene categories are listed in the
rules. Please note that these times include set-up, strike times and the
introduction. There is no grace period. The judge will allow the contestants to
exceed time, without stopping them by one minute, but after that, can stop them
due to time. Ex. If you know their piece is about 9 minutes with the introduction,
make sure the contestants can set-up and strike quickly because they are
being timed from the minute they begin their set-up and will continue being
timed until they are finished their strike. Also, there are minimums for many
categories as well. Make sure that each performance does not fall below the
minimum for their category or they will automatically receive a 5th place rank
and a score of a 70. Even if they are the best in their room! Judges should
state when they are starting the clock for scene and pair competitions.
Each category will be performed at least twice during the day. Ex. Student A
performs poetry in the morning. That student will then perform the same piece
of poetry again in the afternoon. Calculations will be made, and a list of the top
5 scores will be posted. If Student A is on that list, they will perform the same
piece a third time.
If a student is double entered in any one-hour time slot, they must sign-in in
both rooms within the first five minutes of that time slot. Ex. Student A is in both
Improv. Pairs and Dramatic Pairs, but plans on doing their Improv. Pairs first,
they must go to the room where they are supposed to perform their Dramatic
Pair and write on the blackboard the following, “Name, School Code, Name of
their piece and the Author” and the “DE (double entered) WILL RETURN.” This
lets the judge know that they are still planning on performing and to wait until
they return from their other category. However, the judge only has to wait for
the scheduled hour, so if your student is double entered, have them tell the
judge in the first room where they perform so that they can let them go early on
in the hour, if possible.
The time slots may have changed please refer to the attached schedule.
Proper room etiquette: Encourage your students to stay in the room and watch
other people they are competing against. They can learn a lot from watching
their fellow performers. If they need to leave the room because they are double
entered, make sure they do it quietly before anyone else starts to perform.
Also, if they have to enter a room that has already started, they should wait
quietly outside the door until the performer is finished their piece, then quietly
enter the room and have a seat.
It is the “coaches responsibility” to view all material before the competition date.
We encourage the coaches to have the students research and find their own
material, however we also encourage the coaches to view all material for
appropriateness and to make sure that it stays within the guidelines for the
particular category.
In the interest of fairness, parents of students on the Forensics team are not
permitted to judge their own child in any round of competition. Tournament
Directors will do their best to make sure this doesn’t happen, however, it is the
judge’s and the coach’s responsibility to bring it to the attention of the
Tournament Moderator if there is a question or a problem.
All teams present at the beginning of the awards ceremony should remain until
all the awards are distributed. If your team does not qualify for finals, you are
still invited to stay for the ceremony to support the other teams.
Judges are not allowed to disqualify any individual for any reason without first
consulting the tournament moderator. Bring any issues you might have to the
Tournament Moderator and they will assist you and determine if the infraction is
ground for disqualification.
Be sure each entry has a proper end – have the contestant take a beat and
then say “Thank You” to show that their piece is over.
All contestants should dress in appropriate presentational style.
